How refurbishment and upgrade projects are assessed

Condition testing: geometric accuracy, electrical systems and base component condition are fully tested, and remaining life is assessed against the factory standard. Test data is the basis of the assessment - conclusions are never drawn from appearance.

Residual value and economics assessment: residual value, failure downtime losses, retrofit investment and replacement investment are all reduced to one table, giving a three-way repair/upgrade/replace comparison with payback periods. Where the arithmetic does not work for a retrofit, we say plainly that we do not recommend it.

Designing the upgrade scope: decide what is kept, what is repaired and what is renewed. Machines with a sound mechanical base get an electrical rebirth; those with decayed accuracy get restorative repair; production bottlenecks get targeted automation upgrades. The scope is written into the plan - it is not added to as the work goes along.

Implementation and acceptance: spares and tooling staged in advance, construction inside the shutdown window, data recorded for key operations, acceptance by dual trial runs plus accuracy re-measurement. The upgraded machine gets a new file reflecting its new condition.

Updating files and standards: after the upgrade, drawings, parameters and inspection/maintenance standards are updated together, and the upgraded points are brought into the maintenance system. Management of the machine's 'second life' begins the day the upgrade is completed.

Common Questions

Where is the line between refurbishment and scrapping?

Three tests: whether the base components (bed, frame, spindle housing) still have restoration value; whether the ratio of restoration investment to remaining service years is reasonable; and whether there is still a place for it in the process. If two of the three fail, retirement should be considered. We issue a written assessment conclusion, and we do not push upgrades on machines that should be retired - upgrades exist to create value, not to win jobs.

What level can an upgraded machine reach?

In two categories: for electrical rebirth (PLC conversion, drive replacement), function and reliability can exceed the original machine, because the new system's diagnostic capability and protection level are higher; for accuracy restoration, it depends on the condition of the base components - normally restored to what the process needs, and in individual cases close to factory standard. The assessment report states the achievable level and its basis; we do not write blank cheques.
