Guiyang

Guiyang's modern industry came in two waves — wartime relocation and the Third Front programme. During the war of resistance the city took in machinery, electrical, textile and chemical plants moved inland (among them the forerunner of the Guiyang Agricultural Machinery Company), and the rear-area industrial build-out gave Guiyang its first modern industrial skeleton. After the Third Front programme began in 1964, Guiyang was designated a key electronics city: the China Zhenhua Electronics Group (Base 011, electronic components and defence electronics) set up its headquarters here, backbone firms like Huachang and Xinyun were built, and aerospace (parts of Bases 011 and 061), optical instruments and machinery followed — making Guiyang a leading electronics town of the south-west. After reform and opening-up the Third Front enterprises converted to civilian production, and Guiyang used its ecology and energy advantages to grow big data (the Guiyang Big Data Exchange opened in 2015, the national big-data pilot zone landed in 2016), with the digital economy and electronics manufacturing advancing together.

In 2025 Guiyang's above-scale industrial value added grew 8.8%, among the province's best. Electronic information manufacturing is the largest industry — Zhenhua-family defence electronics, server and smart-terminal making, with data centres from Huawei Cloud and Tencent Cloud clustering here. Advanced equipment (aerospace supply, CNC machine tools, construction machinery, and Janyang Power's special vehicles) holds its edge; phosphorus chemicals lead in scale (the Kaiyang-Xifeng integrated phosphorus-coal chemical base); eco-foods are distinctive (tobacco at roughly 31% of industry, plus Laoganma flavour foods and dairy); big data and software IT services are known nationwide. The Guiyang High-tech Zone, the ETDZ and the Shuanglong Airport Economic Zone are the main carriers.

Guiyang is one of the fastest-growing provincial-capital maintenance markets in the south-west. Electromechanical plant in the data-centre cluster (diesel generators, UPS, precision air conditioning, cooling towers) needs round-the-clock outsourced upkeep — large volume and very sticky, a national-scale market. SMT and precision equipment upkeep at electronics makers (defence electronics, servers) carries a high professional bar, with classified-access qualification required. Phosphorus chemical plant (phosphoric acid, ammonium phosphate, coal chemicals) means big overhaul volumes on pumps and reaction equipment; food plants (Laoganma filling lines, cigarette-factory support) keep packaging equipment upkeep steady.
