Tongren

Tongren lies in the heart of the Wuling Mountains on the middle-lower Wujiang River, historically known for cinnabar (the Wanshan mercury mine, a tribute-producing site since the Ming and Qing, the "kingdom of cinnabar"), tung oil and river trade. Modern large-scale mining at Wanshan (the Guizhou Mercury Mine, the nation's largest from the 1950s) contributed heavily to repaying the state's Soviet debt and earning export foreign exchange; after the resource ran out and the mine closed in 2001 it turned to tourism (mercury-mine industrial heritage and the cinnabar old town). During the Third Front era Tongren held only a few supply points. After reform and opening-up the city used its manganese resources (the Songtao-Tongren manganese belt, one of the nation's three major manganese bases) to develop manganese processing; in the 2010s the Dalong ETDZ brought in new energy battery material firms (CNGR Advanced Material, a global precursor leader), turning manganese into a battery-material advantage and moving Tongren from a mercury-and-manganese resource city to a new energy materials city.

In 2025 Tongren's above-scale industrial value added grew 5.6%, among the province's fastest. Manganese new materials and new energy battery materials are the largest industry (CNGR Advanced Material, a global leader in ternary precursors, plus battery recycling; the Hongxing Development family's manganese salts; Huicheng New Material), and the Dalong ETDZ has become an important national base for new energy battery materials. Eco-foods are distinctive (Tongren matcha, first in the nation for output and sales; camellia oil; edible fungi); tourism draws large annual visitor numbers (Mount Fanjing World Natural Heritage, the cinnabar old town); new functional materials and electronics supply are getting under way. Tongren is building toward a new energy materials highland in eastern Guizhou.

Tongren's maintenance demand centres on battery material lines. Precursor and manganese-salt plant (reactors, crystallisation, filter presses, drying, kilns, pneumatic conveying) runs continuously and is highly automated, so preventive maintenance and overhaul demand is both large and specialist; equipment maintenance on battery recycling lines (crushing, sorting, hydrometallurgy) is an emerging professional market; food plants (matcha steaming, grinding, packaging lines) keep equipment upkeep and clean-facility maintenance steady; tourism facilities (the Mount Fanjing ropeway, hotel M&E) are specialty upkeep work.
