Kunming

Kunming's modern industry came in two waves — late-Qing self-strengthening and wartime relocation. The Yunnan-Vietnam Railway opened in the 1900s and pulled up treaty-port industry, with modern plants such as the Yunnan Arsenal and the mint appearing. During the war of resistance Kunming became a rear-area industrial stronghold: the Central Machine Works, the Central Electrical Apparatus Factory, the 22nd/51st/53rd Arsenals, the Leiyun aircraft plant, the China Electric Steel Works and the Yunnan Iron & Steel Works were relocated or newly built, and the four industrial bases at Majie, Ciba, Haikou and Anning took shape — for a time Kunming held China's most complete machinery, electrical, ordnance and metallurgical industry. Under the Third Front programme, backbone enterprises such as the Kunming Optical Instrument Plant and Sino-Platinum (the Institute of Precious Metals) were laid out, founding the optics and new-materials industries.

In 2025 Kunming's above-scale industrial value added grew steadily. Biopharmaceuticals are the largest industry — Yunnan Baiyao Group has built a World Economic Forum "Lighthouse Factory", Walvax makes vaccines, and the Institute of Medical Biology is here. Electronic information (BOE, and Wingtech-family smart-terminal supply) leads in scale; advanced equipment (the Kunming Machine Tool family, North Night Vision, Yunnei Power diesel engines) and new materials (Sino-Platinum's precious metals, tin materials) hold their edge; green petrochemicals and metallurgy in the Anning-west Kunming belt (Kunsteel's Anning base) run steady. The Central Yunnan New Area and the Kunming section of the Pilot Free Trade Zone are the main carriers, and Kunming is building itself into a regional international central city.

Kunming is Yunnan's most concentrated maintenance market. Upkeep of pharmaceutical cleanroom utilities (purification HVAC, pure water, freeze-drying, sterilisation) and production lines (granulation, tableting, filling, packaging) is highly specialised with a steep GMP-compliance bar — and very sticky. Demand for outsourced upkeep of SMT and precision assembly equipment at electronics plants is steady; accuracy maintenance and CNC retrofits on large machine tools at equipment makers (machine tools, diesel engines) are our traditional line of business; metallurgical and chemical plant (Kunsteel Anning) means large overhaul volumes. Our focus: pharmaceutical cleanroom utilities and line upkeep, electronics plant custody, and accuracy calibration and retrofits across machine-tool fleets.
