Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture

Xishuangbanna is a Dai homeland (the autonomous region was set up in 1953, later an autonomous prefecture), lying in the tropics south of the Tropic of Cancer, its economy historically coloured by Pu'er tea, rubber and tropical products. From the 1950s the state laid out rubber planting here — breaking the verdict that rubber cannot grow north of 17°N and building China's second-largest rubber base; rubber became a pillar crop and industrial raw material, while tea (Pu'er), tropical fruit and forestry developed alongside. The Third Front era left a few supply points. After reform and opening-up Xishuangbanna grew tourism and wellness on its world-class rainforest ecology and Dai culture (the CAS Banna Tropical Botanical Garden, Wild Elephant Valley, the Dai Ethnic Village, Gaozhuang Xishuangjing), upgraded rubber and tropical agriculture towards deep processing, and industrialised Dai ethnic medicine.

In 2025 Xishuangbanna's economy is led by tourism and tropical speciality agriculture. Tropical tourism (Wild Elephant Valley, the Dai Ethnic Village, the Gaozhuang night market, rainforest scenic areas) ranks among the province's top for annual visitors, with winter-wellness and cross-border tourism rising (spurred by the China-Laos Railway, opened 2021); the full rubber chain (planting, primary and deep processing, latex products) keeps its national standing; tropical fruit (bananas, pineapples, dragon fruit) and Pu'er tea deep processing are scaling up; Dai ethnic medicine (ethnic drugs, wellness products) is industrialising; green energy (hydro, solar) is starting. The prefecture is building into a world-famous tourism city and a border opening-up demonstration zone.

Xishuangbanna's maintenance demand centres on rubber processing and tourism facilities. Upkeep of rubber processing (coagulation, creping, drying, baling) and latex-products equipment is steady, with process retrofits continuing; tourism facilities (scenic cableways, cruise boats, hotel M&E, central AC, sewage treatment) form a large, specialist upkeep market, and packaged O&M for winter-wellness hotel clusters is growing; tropical-fruit processing (washing, sorting, drying, packaging, cold chain) means large, strongly seasonal equipment counts; Dai-medicine (extraction, formulation) cleanroom upkeep is sticky.
