Yuxi

Yuxi's modern industry is marked by tobacco: the Yuxi Cigarette Factory (forerunner of Hongta Group) was built in 1956; through the 1980s and 1990s "Hongtashan" became China's number-one cigarette brand, and the factory — for a time the country's largest, contributing enormous tax revenue — shaped the city's "famous tobacco town" profile. Under the Third Front programme Yuxi took in mining and metallurgy (the Yimen copper mine, the Xinping iron-mine complex) and machinery suppliers. After reform and opening-up, on capital and know-how accumulated from tobacco, Yuxi grew mining and metallurgy (nickel, phosphorus chemicals), equipment manufacturing (machine tools, motors) and biopharmaceuticals (the Walvax family, Yuyao and others), forming a diversified industrial system. Eco-tourism at Fuxian and Xingyun lakes has also become a city calling card.

In 2025 Yuxi's above-scale industrial value added grew steadily. Tobacco (Hongta Group and cigarette suppliers) is the largest industry, contributing stable tax revenue; mining and metallurgy (ferronickel, phosphorus chemicals, the Tonghai-Xinping belt) hold their scale; equipment (CNC machine tools, motors, mining machinery) and biopharmaceuticals (vaccines, traditional Chinese patent medicines) advance together; new energy (solar PV, lithium-battery material supply) is starting up. The Yuxi High-tech Zone and the Yanhe belt are the main carriers, and the city is building into a key industrial node of the central-Yunnan urban economic circle.

Yuxi's maintenance demand centres on tobacco and mining-metallurgy equipment. In cigarette plants the primary-processing and make-pack machines (high-speed units) are extremely automated and run continuously; upkeep and spare-part repair are specialised with a high entry bar (OEM qualifications are mostly required) — a high-end installed-base market. Ferronickel and phosphorus chemistry mean large overhauls on smelting furnaces, pumps and conveying equipment; accuracy maintenance on machine-tool and motor works is steady; pharmaceutical cleanroom utilities and lines are sticky work.
