Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture

Nujiang lies in the Hengduan Mountain gorge country, the Nu River Grand Canyon running through the whole prefecture. Historically transport was extremely closed (rope slides, horse caravans), and the economy rested on tsao-ko, raw lacquer, medicinal herbs and mountain-goods trade, with almost no modern industry; the Third Front era left only scattered supply points. After reform and opening-up Nujiang pushed hydro development on its water resources (the middle-upper Nu cascade — adjusted once amid ecological controversy, with cautious large-station building on the mainstream and small hydro on tributaries), and hydropower became the industrial mainstay; speciality agriculture (the nation's largest tsao-ko plantings, walnuts, nuts, herbal medicines) scaled up; tourism (Bingzhongluo, the Dulong River, the Nu Grand Canyon) started. The prefecture is a national key ecological function zone and was a deeply impoverished area (a main battlefield of poverty alleviation); eco-migration and industry-led poverty relief reshaped its economy.

In 2025 Nujiang Prefecture's economy is led by clean energy and speciality agriculture. Hydropower (tributary stations and cautious mainstream development) outputs steadily, and alpine solar is starting; the full tsao-ko chain (planting, drying, essential-oil extraction, condiments) leads the nation in scale — this is "China's Home of Tsao-ko"; deep processing of walnuts, nuts, herbal medicines (paris rhizome, Yunnan coptis) and alpine speciality breeding (Nujiang bees, Dulong cattle) is scaling up; tourism (Bingzhongluo, the secret Dulong River, the Nujiang Beautiful Highway) is receiving more visitors each year. Ecological protection red lines bind strictly across the prefecture, so industrial admission is limited to clean energy and eco-friendly farm-product processing.

Nujiang's maintenance demand centres on hydro and farm-product processing. At hydro stations in alpine-canyon conditions, electromechanical overhauls and preventive testing of turbines, governors, excitation systems, gate hoists and penstocks follow defined cycles at a high professional bar, and difficult access puts a premium on resident service; upkeep of tsao-ko drying, essential-oil extraction (distillation, condensation) and herbal-medicine processing (washing, slicing, drying) is steady, with growing process-retrofit demand; tourism facilities (hotels, cableways, sewage treatment) are a supplementary line.
