Mianyang's modern industrial base comes mainly from the Third Front programme. From 1965 the state moved the China Academy of Engineering Physics (the Ninth Academy) from Qinghai into the Zitong hills (siting related to the codenamed "Project 839"), and units of Base 062 were sited in the Mianyang area; the "mountain-backed, dispersed, concealed" siting principle rooted a batch of cutting-edge research-and-production units in northern Sichuan. Defence-electronics firms such as Factory 780 (Changhong's forerunner) were built in the same period. After Mianyang became a city in 1985 the Ninth Academy moved wholly into the urban area, and in the military-to-civilian wave Changhong's colour TVs rose to make it a national home-appliance icon. Science-city construction began in 2000, converting research-institute resources into industrial capability step by step.
In 2025 Mianyang's above-scale industrial value added grew steadily. New-type displays, on BOE's Mianyang base (flexible AMOLED) and HKC Display, have formed a panel-module-terminal chain; industrialisation of nuclear-technology applications (medical isotopes, irradiation processing) is accelerating; the drone industry (AVIC UAS, the Tengden family) is delivering in batches; veteran electronics firms such as Changhong and Jiuzhou are upgrading towards intelligent manufacturing and defence electronics. The share of high-tech industry in citywide revenue keeps rising — Mianyang is Sichuan's second-largest industrial city.

Mianyang's maintenance demand reads "high-end, precise, special". Display-panel line equipment (exposure, coating, cleaning) runs continuously with very short maintenance windows and exacting cleanroom work procedures; equipment at defence firms and research institutes is under classified management, so repair qualification and confidentiality protocols are the entry bar; the large numbers of stamping, injection-moulding and assembly lines in Changhong-family appliance making are entering mid-to-late equipment life, giving steady retrofit and preventive-maintenance demand.
