Chengdu

Chengdu's modern industry began with late-Qing self-strengthening: in 1877 Sichuan Governor-General Ding Baozhen set up the Sichuan Machinery Bureau here, the first modern ordnance works in the south-west. During the war of resistance coastal factories moved inland en masse and Chengdu took in the Central Radio Apparatus Factory and other defence and machinery enterprises, forming its first modern industrial skeleton. After the Third Front programme began in 1964, Chengdu was designated a key siting city for electronics, aviation and machinery: Factory 420 (Chengdu Engine Corporation), Factory 132 (Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Corporation) and the Hongming Radio Apparatus Factory, among other backbones, were set into the hills around the city, laying Chengdu's aviation and electronics inheritance. After reform and opening-up the Third Front plants turned to civilian goods and were restructured; the Chengdu High-tech Zone was established in 1988, and new industries such as electronic information and biopharmaceuticals grew on from there.

In 2025 Chengdu's above-scale industrial value added kept growing. Electronic information passed CNY 1 trillion, with clusters in integrated circuits, new-type displays and smart terminals taking shape; in aerospace, Chengfei's series of models are delivered in batches and the civil aviation industrial park is forming fast; FAW-Volkswagen's Chengdu base and the Volvo Chengdu plant pull the vehicle and component supply system. Citywide industrial-robot output is growing quickly and intelligent-manufacturing retrofit projects increase year by year — Chengdu is a nationally important electronic-information base and high-end equipment cluster.

Tongwei (dual main businesses in PV and agriculture, among Sichuan's top-100 enterprises), BOE's Chengdu base (flexible displays), Intel's Chengdu plant (chip assembly and test), Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group (fighter aircraft), FAW-Volkswagen's Chengdu branch, the Volvo Chengdu plant, Sichuan Changhong's supply-chain firms, and Chengdu Hangli (aero-engine MRO).

Chengdu is the south-west's most concentrated market for installed industrial equipment. Cleanroom equipment at electronics plants (placement machines, vacuum coating, pure-water systems) turns over fast and downtime is costly, so predictive maintenance and rapid response are demanded to a very high standard; machine tools, assembly lines and test equipment across the aviation and automotive chains are highly specialised and need all-round repair capability grounded in process knowledge. Third-party supply for high-end equipment (imported CNC systems, robot workstations) is relatively limited — most plants still rely on OEM service, juggling scheduling against cost.
