Wanzhou District

Wanzhou (the old Wan County) is the gateway to eastern Sichuan and an important Yangtze port. After opening as a treaty port in the late Qing it became the materials hub of eastern Sichuan — Wanxian opened as a port in 1902, with foreign trading houses and domestic industry side by side; during the war of resistance Wanxian was a relocation and transshipment hub, with machinery, textile and chemical firms sited along the river. Under the Third Front programme ship repair and building, machinery and chemical enterprises were laid out here. After Chongqing became a directly administered municipality in 1997, Wanzhou became the regional centre of north-east Chongqing (the former Wanxian City merged into Chongqing); impoundment of the Three Gorges project (2003-2009) submerged parts of the old county seat, the city was rebuilt landward as a whole, and resettlement drove the reconstruction of infrastructure and industry.

In 2025 Wanzhou's above-scale industry grew steadily. Food processing (oils and fats, condiments, the industrialisation of Wanzhou zhajiang noodles, fruit and vegetable processing) is the largest industry, on an important national oil-and-fat processing base; new materials (metal and chemical new materials) move with equipment manufacturing (ship supply, general machinery, new-energy equipment); commerce-logistics advantages stand out (Yangtze port, rail hub, airport), with the Wanzhou ETDZ (national level) the main carrier; and the digital economy advances with tourism (the Three Gorges Migrants' Memorial, the Pinghu tourism area). The city is building the core of the north-east-Chongqing Three Gorges reservoir urban cluster.

Wanzhou's maintenance demand centres on food and port equipment. Pressing, refining, filling and packaging lines at oil and food plants are large in scale, with continuous upkeep and automation-retrofit demand; upkeep, mandatory annual-inspection rectification and overhauls of port machinery (quayside cranes, portal cranes, belt conveying systems) are specialised work; upkeep of machining and welding equipment at ship-supply and general-machinery plants is steady; and overhauls on chemical new-materials plant follow defined cycles.
